Sometimes when mounting a sshfs filesystem OS X will not read a file incorrectly stating that it is damaged.

Solution:
xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /path/to/encfs/mount/point

Or a less safe option:
System Preference -> Security & Privacy -> Allow Apps downloaded from: Anywhere
